Our commitment: Walked? is designed with privacy at its core. Your data — including the routes you record — stays on your device and in your personal iCloud account. We don't collect, sell, or share your personal information. We don't run ads. We don't have servers of our own. The only thing the app sends for us is an anonymous daily count of which features were used, which you can turn off (see Anonymous Usage Statistics).
What Data Does Walked? Store?
Walked? stores the following information locally on your device:
- Dog profiles — name and emoji avatar
- Walk schedules — walk labels (e.g. Morning, Evening) and optional scheduled times
- Walk logs — who walked the dog, when, and which walk
- Walk routes — for walks you track with GPS: the recorded path, distance and duration
- Family member names — display names for people in your household
- Your display name — the name shown when you mark a walk as done
- App preferences — notification settings, daily reset time
All of this data is created by you and stored on your device.
iCloud Sync
If you use the Family Sharing feature (Pro), your dog and walk data is synced through Apple's iCloud (CloudKit). This means:
- Data is stored in your personal iCloud account, protected by your Apple ID
- Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple
- Only people you explicitly invite via iCloud sharing can see your data
- We (Smart Kiitös Oy) have zero access to your iCloud data
- If you stop using iCloud sync, your data remains on your device
For details on how Apple handles iCloud data, see Apple's iCloud Privacy Overview.
Location Data
Walked? uses your location for one purpose: to draw the route of a walk you have started. Nothing else in the app asks for it.
- Location is only recorded between the moment you tap Start Walk and the moment the walk ends or is cancelled.
- The app requests “While Using the App” permission. Recording continues while your screen is locked so the route isn't lost in your pocket — iOS shows its blue location indicator the whole time.
- Routes are stored on your device and, if you use family sync, in your household's private iCloud container. They are never sent to us.
- You can decline or revoke location access at any time in iOS Settings. Walked? keeps working — you simply log walks with one tap instead of recording a route.
Live Share Links
Sharing a walk as a live link (a Pro feature you turn on per walk) is the one case where walk data leaves your private container. Here is exactly what happens:
- When you turn sharing on, the app creates a record in a public Apple CloudKit database containing only the in-progress walk: the route so far, distance, start time, and your dog's name. It contains no account, no email, and no device identifier.
- The record is addressed by a randomly generated, unguessable identifier that exists only inside the link you send. There is no directory, index, or search — a link cannot be discovered or enumerated by anyone you didn't send it to.
- Anyone holding the link can view that walk while it is running, without an app or account. Treat the link like a key and share it only with people you want watching.
- The record is deleted as soon as the walk ends, and the link stops working. You can also stop sharing mid-walk, which deletes it immediately.
- Sharing is off by default and must be switched on for each individual walk. If you never use it, no walk data ever leaves your private iCloud.
Anonymous Usage Statistics
To understand which features are actually used, so we can improve the app, Walked? keeps simple per-day counters of in-app events on your device. After a day is over, it uploads one summary record for that day to Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) servers, into a public CloudKit database that belongs to Smart Kiitös. No third-party analytics service is involved, and we run no servers of our own.
Each daily record contains only:
- which app it comes from, and the date
- the app version
- your device's region setting (the country chosen in iOS Settings — not your location)
- whether you have Pro or not
- a coarse “days since install” bucket: 0, 1–6, 7–29, 30+, or “existing user”
- counts of in-app events: which screens were opened, which features were used, which multi-step flows were started or completed, which errors were shown, when the paywall was shown or closed, and purchases
It never contains anything you create or enter — no dog names, walk routes, GPS locations, distances, step counts or family names — and no health data, no name, email, Apple ID, device identifier or advertising identifier. Apple's servers attach an opaque random identifier to each record; we do not read it, and we cannot link records to a person or to each other across days.
- The counts are not linked to your identity, not used for tracking or advertising, and never shared with or sold to anyone.
- It is on by default. You can turn it off in the app's Settings at any time; that stops uploads and deletes any counts not yet sent.
- Our App Store privacy label declares this as Usage Data › Product Interaction, used for Analytics, not linked to you, and not used for tracking.
What We Don't Collect
We collect no personal data. Apart from the anonymous usage counts described above, Walked? sends us nothing — it has no servers of its own and no way to access your data, including your routes.
- No email addresses or phone numbers
- No account registration required
- No location history outside a walk you started, and no background tracking
- No photos or camera access
- No contacts access
- No browsing history, and no usage analytics beyond the anonymous, opt-out counts described above
- No advertising identifiers
- No third-party tracking SDKs
Notifications
Walked? uses local notifications (on your device) to remind you about walk times. These notifications are processed entirely on your device and are never sent to any server.
Subscriptions & Payments
Purchases are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store any payment information (credit card numbers, billing addresses, etc.). Apple processes all transactions according to their privacy policy.
Third-Party Services
Walked? uses no third-party services. There are no third-party analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or social media SDKs in the app.
The only external service used is Apple's iCloud (CloudKit) — for optional family sync, live share links, and the anonymous usage statistics described above — which is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
Children's Privacy
Walked? does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. The app does not require any personal information to function — the display name you enter is stored locally and is never transmitted to us.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
